Get ready to go
- Check travel advice first. The U.S. State Department rates India Level 2, "exercise increased caution". It says do not travel to Jammu and Kashmir (except eastern Ladakh and Leh), to Manipur, or near the India-Pakistan border.
- Permits. Foreign visitors need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit for parts of the Northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh. Arrange it before you go.
- Visas: most visitors need a visa. Apply only through the Government of India's official visa site, not a look-alike.
- Health: see the CDC's India page for recommended vaccines and food and water advice, ideally a month or more before you go.
Travel advice changes. Read the latest version before you book and again before you leave.
