ToolIs it in Schengen, the EU or the euro area?
Pick a country, or tap it on the map, to see whether it's in the Schengen area, the European Union and the euro area. Switch the map between the three to see every member in blue and every other country in red.
The Schengen area, the EU and the euro area are three different clubs. A Schengen visa covers the 29 Schengen countries, not the whole EU, and some Schengen countries aren't in the EU at all. Memberships as listed on official EU pages in October 2026.

Good to know
- Schengen visa: one short-stay visa (or a visa-free stay) covers all 29 Schengen countries, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole area. Apply to the country where you'll spend the most time, or where you'll enter first if the time is equal.
- Not covered by a Schengen visa: Ireland and the UK (each has its own visa), Cyprus (until it joins in full) and countries outside the EU such as Serbia, Albania or Türkiye, which have their own rules.
- New border checks: the EU is bringing in the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records non-EU travellers at Schengen borders, and the ETIAS travel authorisation for visa-free visitors. Check what applies to you, and from when, on the official Travel to Europe site.
- Money: the euro area is not the same as the EU. Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Romania keep their own currencies, while Montenegro and Kosovo use the euro without being in the EU. See money abroad.
- Count the countries you've been to on the Europe visited map.
