Passports, visas and IDIndia e-Visa: types, fees and how to apply
Citizens of many countries can apply online for an Indian e-Visa instead of visiting an embassy. Here is how the tourist e-Visa works.
Who can apply
Citizens of most countries, including the United States, can apply for an e-Visa. Some nationalities cannot, and people of Pakistani origin must apply through an embassy. Check your eligibility on the official site.
The e-Tourist visa options
- 30 days: allows two entries.
- 1 year and 5 years: multiple entries, with a limit on how long each stay or each year can be (the limit depends on your nationality).
There are also e-Business, e-Medical and e-Conference visas. e-Visas cannot be extended or converted to another type once issued.
Fees
Fees depend on your nationality and the visa length, and the 30-day visa has had a lower price in the April to June season. Pay only on the official government site, which shows the fee for your country.
Passport and photo
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date and have at least two blank pages.
- You upload a photo and the passport's photo page. Our photo tool can crop a square photo for you.
When to apply
Apply several days before you travel; India has asked applicants to apply at least four days ahead. Print the approval (the ETA) and carry it.
Avoid fake sites
Many websites look official but charge high service fees. The official address is indianvisaonline.gov.in.
