Good to know

  • Travel advice: the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, asks for caution in Ukhia and Teknaf, and says to take particular care near the border with India. Places close to that border are marked. Also check the U.S. State Department.
  • Floods: the haors and rivers of Sylhet flood in the rainy season, sometimes with little warning. Follow the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and local advice, and wear a life jacket on boats.
  • Best time: the dry season, roughly November to February, is easiest for roads and ruins. Waterfalls are fullest in the rains.
  • Sundarbans and islands: the Sundarbans need a permit, so go with a licensed tour. Boats to the islands can stop in rough weather.
  • Be respectful: dress modestly at mosques, temples and shrines, and take off your shoes where asked.
  • Handy tools: packing list maker, emergency numbers, trip budget planner and prayer times.
